Comments in [ ].Upon critiquing the film Enchanted [Assume this is underlined or italicized in the original.], Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper makes many favorable comments. One claim he formulates [Not technically wrong, but 'formulate'?] is that the film has a sound background in Disney animation (Ebert)[If he made the claim, he is the source. This seems extraneous unless you're following some odd formatting policy.]. He goes on to support this assertion with several details. Ebert explains that Enchanteds [See above.] director Kevin Lima, musical director Alan Menken and lyric writer Stephen Schwartz are all well-experienced, having worked on such films as Tarzan, Pocahontas, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame [See above.]. These details [You talk about detailS, then give what is essentially one detail, then back to detailS.] help to develop Eberts credibility, as they are established [Passive.] as facts on the internet movie database (IMDb). Ebert also claims that Enchanted [See above.] is a heart-winning musical comedy that skips lightly and sprightly from the lily pads of hope to the manhole covers of actuality the film.[Something wrong here. I know it's in quotes, but Ebert wouldn't mess up English that badly. The part 'the film' seems to be hanging out in space.] However, it does not appear that he supports this claim in any way [Ye gods! It's a METAPHOR.]. Instead, Ebert expertly employs an emotional appeal through the use of joyful language and makes it more noticeable by using it as a transitional sentence.Ebert continues to enhance his review with several techniques. He uses [his use of??] phrases such as kibosh, sprightly and homeless waif gives [give??] [Not changing any words here, but something is screwed up.]his critique a more informal feel, which appeals to many readers. Ebert also creates an informal read [Great verb; not a noun.] through the use of humor. In the following quote, it may appear that Ebert is damaging his credibility; however, he is in fact using humor to keep the audiences interest. What results is a heart-winning musical comedy that skips lightly and sprightly from the lily pads of hope to the manhole covers of actuality, if you see what I mean. I'm not sure I do (Ebert)[Of course it's Ebert - you just said so. I don't get the 'damaging his credibility' point.What is it?]. Often, if an article seems too formal, many readers immediately lose interest. That is certainly not the case with Ebert, as shown in the previous quote. His use of humor keeps the audiences attention; while it may seem that it would actually draw attention away from the purpose of the article, Ebert immediately brings the focus back to his main argument. Through his use of humor and word choice, Ebert manages to avoid losing readers from disinterest [Wrong word. Disinterested = neutral, unbiased. Uninterested = bored, not interested. Just use 'lack of interest.' That's what you mean. Ironic that this crops up in a sentence dealing with word choice.]One supposition Ebert makes about his audience is that they are familiar with Enchanted [See above.] lead actress Amy Adams. In his opening paragraph, Ebert favorably refers to Adams role in the film Junebug[Why, out of the clear blue, use quotes around a title and then revert to nothing in the next sentence?]. He then goes on to say that the audience should have seen Junebug by now, making the large [All assumptions are the same size.] assumption that the audience is familiar with the film. More |
